Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about calculating grades.

How do I calculate my grade with weights?

Multiply each assignment score by its weight percentage, then add all the results together. For example, if your midterm (40% weight) score is 85 and your final (60% weight) score is 90, your grade is (85 × 0.40) + (90 × 0.60) = 34 + 54 = 88.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted grades?

An unweighted grade treats every assignment equally — it's simply the average of all your scores. A weighted grade gives different assignments different levels of importance. For example, a final exam might count for 40% of your grade while homework counts for 20%.

How do I calculate my grade as a percentage?

Divide the points you earned by the total points possible, then multiply by 100. For example, if you scored 42 out of 50 points: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Use our Final Grade Calculator for that. The formula is: Required grade = (Goal grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight. For example, if you need a 70% overall, currently have 65%, and the final is worth 30%: (70 − 65 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 81.7%.

Is a 70% a passing grade?

In most US high schools and colleges, yes — 70% is typically the minimum passing grade (a D). However, some programs, especially nursing, engineering, or graduate school, require a minimum of 75% or 80% to pass.

How do I calculate my GPA from letter grades?

Convert each letter grade to its GPA point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0), then average those values across all your courses. Use our GPA Calculator for a more accurate result that accounts for credit hours.

Can I use this calculator for college courses?

Yes. This calculator works for any course structure — high school, college, or university. Just enter each graded item, its score, and its weight. If your professor doesn't use weights, the unweighted mode averages all scores equally.
