Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about weighted GPA.

What is a weighted GPA?

A weighted GPA gives bonus grade points to students who take more challenging courses. On a standard 4.0 scale, an A is always worth 4.0 points. On a weighted 5.0 scale, an A in an Honors course is worth 4.5 and an A in an AP or IB course is worth 5.0. This rewards students who take rigorous coursework even if their raw grade is slightly lower.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale and treats all courses equally — an A in gym is the same as an A in AP Physics. Weighted GPA adjusts for course difficulty by adding bonus points for Honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) courses. A student with a 3.8 unweighted GPA might have a 4.4 weighted GPA if they took many advanced courses.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?

Most colleges review both, but practices vary. Some colleges recalculate your GPA using their own formula when evaluating applications, stripping out the weighting to make fair comparisons between students from different schools. The strength of your course load (how many AP/Honors classes you took) is often evaluated separately from the GPA number itself.

How is weighted GPA calculated?

The formula is the same as standard GPA but uses adjusted grade points: sum(weightedPoints × credits) ÷ totalCredits. For each course, look up the weighted point value (e.g. A in AP = 5.0), multiply by credit hours, sum all courses, then divide by total credits. This calculator handles all of that automatically.

Can my weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?

Yes. A weighted GPA on a 5.0 scale can exceed 4.0 if you take enough Honors, AP, or IB courses with strong grades. GPAs between 4.0 and 5.0 are common for high-achieving students who take many advanced courses. The maximum possible is 5.0 (straight A's in all AP/IB courses).

What bonus points do AP and Honors courses get?

The most common system adds +0.5 to each grade for Honors courses and +1.0 for AP and IB courses. So an A in a standard course = 4.0, an A in Honors = 4.5, and an A in AP/IB = 5.0. A B in AP = 3.0 + 1.0 = 4.0. Note that some schools use different bonus amounts — check your school's official policy.
