How do I calculate my test score percentage?
Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100. For example, if you got 34 out of 40 correct: 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%. This works for any test, quiz, or exam regardless of the number of questions.
How do I convert a score to a letter grade?
Once you have your percentage, compare it to the standard letter grade scale. 90–100% is an A, 80–89% is a B, 70–79% is a C, 60–69% is a D, and below 60% is an F. Most schools use plus and minus grades within those ranges — for example, 93–96% is an A, while 90–92% is an A−.
What if my test uses points instead of questions?
Use the "By Points" tab. Enter the points you earned and the total points possible — the math is identical. For example, 87 points out of 100 possible = 87%. 43.5 points out of 50 possible = 87%. The calculator accepts decimals for partial credit situations.
How many questions can I miss and still pass?
It depends on the total number of questions. To pass with a 60%, you can miss 40% of questions — so on a 25-question test you can miss 10, on a 40-question test you can miss 16, on a 50-question test you can miss 20. The "What if I got more right?" panel shows exactly what happens to your grade if you had answered 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 more correctly.
What is the passing score for most tests?
In most US schools, a 60% or above (grade D−) is technically passing, though many teachers require a 70% (C−) to move on. For college courses, a C or 73% is often required to receive credit toward a major. Professional certifications and standardised tests often have different cutoffs — typically 70–75%.
Does this calculator work for weighted tests?
Yes — use the "By Points" tab. If your test has questions worth different amounts (e.g., multiple choice worth 1 point and essays worth 10 points), just enter your total points earned and total points possible. The percentage calculation is the same regardless of how the points are distributed.
How is a quiz score different from an exam score?
Quiz scores and exam scores are calculated the same way — correct answers divided by total questions, multiplied by 100. The difference is only in how much weight they carry toward your final grade.
