How to Use This Calculator

Two modes — pick the one that matches your situation.

Before the exam — "What do I need?"

  1. Enter your current grade as a percentage
  2. Enter your target grade (use the quick-pick buttons)
  3. Enter the final exam weight from your syllabus
  4. See the required score instantly, plus a scenario table

After the exam — "What will I get?"

  1. Switch to the "What will my grade be?" tab
  2. Enter your current grade before the final
  3. Enter the score you got on the final
  4. See your final course grade instantly

The Formula

The required final exam score is calculated using this formula:

Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

Example: Current grade 82%, target 90%, final worth 25%:

= (90 − 82 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25
= (90 − 61.5) ÷ 0.25
= 28.5 ÷ 0.25
= 114% — not achievable

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about final exam grade calculations.

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

The formula is: Required = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight. For example, if your current grade is 85%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 30%: Required = (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7%. In this case, it's not possible to reach 90% — you'd need over 100% on the final.

How much does my final exam affect my grade?

It depends entirely on how much weight your professor assigns to it. A final worth 20% has much less impact than one worth 50%. Use the "What will my grade be?" tab to see exactly how different final exam scores would change your overall grade given a specific weight.

What if the required score is over 100%?

If the calculator shows a score over 100%, it means your target grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade and the final exam weight. You'll need to adjust your target to something achievable. The scenario table shows you what is possible for each grade level.

What if the required score is negative?

A negative required score means you've already locked in your target grade — even scoring 0% on the final won't drop you below it. The calculator shows a checkmark (✓) in this case. This happens when your current grade is well above the target and the final is worth a small percentage.

What does "final exam weight" mean?

The final exam weight is the percentage of your overall course grade that the final exam counts for. Check your syllabus — it's usually listed as something like "Final Exam: 30%". Enter 30 in the weight field (not 0.30). Common values are 20%, 25%, 30%, and 40%.

Can I use this if my final is cumulative vs. non-cumulative?

Yes — the calculator works the same way regardless of whether your final is cumulative. The only thing that matters mathematically is the weight (percentage of total grade) and what score you get on it. The content of the exam doesn't affect the grade calculation.

What is the difference between the two calculator modes?

"What score do I need?" calculates the minimum final exam score required to reach a target grade — useful before the exam. "What will my grade be?" calculates your final course grade given a specific final exam score — useful after the exam or to model different scenarios.
