Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about calculating GPA.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated using quality points. Multiply each course's grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.) by its credit hours to get quality points. Then divide the total quality points by the total credit hours. For example: an A in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points. A B in a 4-credit course = 12 quality points. Total: 24 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

What is a good GPA?

In US colleges, a 3.0 GPA (B average) is generally considered the minimum for "good standing." A 3.5 or above is typically considered a strong GPA and may qualify for honors. A 3.7 or above is excellent. Graduate school admissions often require a minimum 3.0, with competitive programs expecting 3.5 or higher.

What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA is calculated only from the courses taken in a single semester. Cumulative GPA is the overall GPA across all semesters combined. This calculator computes GPA for whatever courses you enter — add one semester's courses for semester GPA, or all your courses for cumulative GPA.

How do I raise my GPA?

Raising your GPA gets harder as you accumulate more credits because each new grade has less weight on your cumulative average. The most effective approach is to focus on high-credit courses — a strong grade in a 4-credit course improves your GPA more than in a 1-credit course. Retaking failed courses (where allowed) can also help, as some schools replace the original grade.

Does an A+ count as more than an A for GPA?

At most US universities, A+ and A are both worth 4.0 quality points. Some schools do give A+ a value of 4.3, which can push your GPA above 4.0. Check your institution's specific grading policy — this calculator uses the standard 4.0 scale where A+ = 4.0.

How many credit hours should I enter?

Enter the credit hours listed on your course syllabus or transcript — typically 3 credits for standard courses and 4 credits for lab-heavy courses like sciences. Labs and seminars might be 1–2 credits. P/F (pass/fail) courses typically do not count toward GPA and should be excluded.
